What a Chemical Peel Can Do for Your Face

People have been using chemical peels to enhance their skin since the earliest civilizations. Ancient Egyptians applied sour milk — which is rich in lactic acid — to rejuvenate their skin. Today, you have much more pleasant-smelling options when it comes to chemical peels.

Our team of aesthetic professionals at SculptMD in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, have been using chemical peels to help clients like you maintain youthful, glowing complexions. These treatments address various skin imperfections, including:

Chemical peels are customizable and available in varying strengths, making them a powerful tool in your beauty arsenal. Let’s explore how these treatments work and what they can do for your skin.

How do chemical peels work?

Your skin has several layers, and most imperfections are found in the surface layer. These cells are exposed to UV rays, pollution, and other factors that lead to dryness, rough texture, discoloration, and fine lines.

A chemical peel is a deep exfoliant treatment, sloughing away the layer of dead, dry skin cells on the surface. In addition to getting rid of the old, dull skin, a chemical peel can also stimulate the production of fresh, new skin cells. Chemical peels can also boost collagen and elastin production, which can plump and tighten your skin.

Is a chemical peel the right treatment for me?

We offer three chemical peel strengths: superficial, medium, and deep. Before beginning any treatment, we provide a thorough skin consultation. We ask about your concerns and evaluate the health of your skin to identify the best chemical peel to meet your needs.

Superficial

Superficial chemical peels are the lightest variety and don’t require downtime to recover. We use gentle chemicals that only penetrate the uppermost layer of your skin. A superficial peel offers excellent exfoliation, brightening and smoothing your skin instantly. We often recommend superficial chemical peels to address mild discoloration, rough texture, and very fine lines.

Medium

A medium chemical peel uses more potent chemicals that get even deeper into your skin. We use medium peels to address fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and mild scarring caused by acne or trauma. You may need up to a week for your skin to recover from a medium chemical peel and to see the full results of your treatment.

Deep

As the name indicates, deep chemical peels use the strongest — but still safe — chemicals to target even deeper layers of your skin. You may need an anesthetic during the treatment and up to 10 days for the exfoliation to be complete and may not see the full results of your peel for three months. We may suggest a deep feel for deeper scarring, age spots, wrinkles, and freckles.
